Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook (NYM Series) Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook (NYM Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love my crockpots (I have two oval ones in different sizes). I have several crockpot cookbooks in my bookshelf and have also read many others which I borrowed from the library. After reading these books, I came to a sad conconclustion that most people who use crockpot are not "real cooks" from many cookbook authors assumption; they write books for those who use a crockpot to make "canned soup+meat+frozen/canned veggie dishes."
I like quick and easy dishes and use canned soup occasionally but I don't want them to be the main item of my cooking.
With this thought, I was surfing the net a couple of days ago hoping to find a crockpot cookbook using fresh wholesome food and I came across this book.
The authors of this book created crockpot recipes for a cook like me (if you agree to my comment above, you will be happy to see this book!). After I read a couple of reviews by other Amazon users and bought this book (along with the Gourmet Slow Cooker Cookbook) from Amazon.
Yes, it requires more prep time and more ingredients but isn't it worth making that much efforts for healthier and tastier meals?! YES!!
Also, most ingredients appeared in this book are common items in my kitchen.
The only minus (4 stars istead of 5 stars) is the lack of photos of the recipes. I read cookbooks for plesure and those sumptuous looking photos are important to me. I know it makes the book more expensive if you have photos but it would be great if there are several pages of photos under each category to show how good these dishes look! I would definitely pay several more dollars for the photos for this book!

Cooking Light Stir-Fry Cookbook Review

Cooking Light Stir-Fry Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because I've been trying to avoid Chinese take-out! I love Chinese food, but take-out can be so greasy. By making my own, I can control the oil and sodium in each dish.
An avid collector of Cooking Light books, I had to pick this up! More than 100 recipes; lots of fish, poultry, and beef selections; lots of variety. Got it yesterday; made the beef with spinach and ginger sauce for dinner that night. Got good reviews from my testers!
Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the book covers more than Asian stir fry. Cuisines covered include Mexican and Italian, with fajitas and other quick cooking, high-heat dishes.
Enjoy!

Fabulous Lo-Carb Cuisine Review

Fabulous Lo-Carb Cuisine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my favorite low carb recipe book. No crunch up pork rinds to pretend they are something else; real food without exotic ingredients requiring a trip to health food store. Two favorite recipes: Lasagna stuffed peppers and Strawberry Custard tarts. All the desserts do NOT consist of let's leave the crust off the pie and make a sugar free pudding filling.
I owe the friend who recommended big time (as a slim book I originally wasn't going to buy -- but more than a dozen recipes you'll actually make and use are worth more than a book of 300 you won't).

Click Here to see more reviews about: Fabulous Lo-Carb Cuisine

Included in these pages are more than 100 great-tasting, easy-to-prepare low-carbohydrate recipes that will add variety to your meals: everything from delicious soups to nut-topped tarts. There are Appetizers like White Pizza, Buffalo Wings, and Hot Artichoke and Spinach Dip. Gourmet Salads and Vegetables like Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato Salad; Portobello Slices; and Roasted Asparagus. Sensational Sauces and Dressings like Orange-Rosemary Butter, Russian Dressing, and Sweet and Sour Mustard Sauce. Main Dishes like Philly Cheese Steak, Kung Pao Chicken, and Beef Paprikash. And Dazzling Desserts like Key Lime Pie, Strawberry Mousse, Fruit Pizza with Marzipan Crust, and Coffee Ice Cream--all of which use the great new artificial sweetener SPLENDA. Every recipe includes nutritional data, so you'll know exactly what you're eating.

FIX-IT and FORGET-IT LIGHTLY : Healthy, Low-Fat Recipes for Your Slow Cooker Review

FIX-IT and FORGET-IT LIGHTLY : Healthy, Low-Fat Recipes for Your Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Containing over a thousand tried-and-true recipes from cooks all over the country, this cookbook provides easy slow cooker meals, all with reduced fat and reduced salt. Substitutions are the key here, with reduced fat ingredients such as turkey sausage and ground turkey, in place of beef, and low-fat cuts of pork, skinless and boneless chicken breasts, and low-fat cuts of beef in place of the higher fat cuts normally used. Low-fat condensed mushroom and chicken soup (canned), low sodium barbecue sauce, low-fat or nonfat cheeses, and low-sodium tomatoes and tomato sauce replace the usual products.
The soup section is the largest section, and there are over twenty-five versions of chili. Desserts feature fruit, rice pudding, and bread pudding, but there is one Hot Fudge Cake resembling the standard "Denver Chocolate Pudding Cake," which quickly converts this delicious baked recipe to the slow cooker.
The primary value of this cookbook is that it shows easy adaptations of standard recipes, so if you have favorite recipes and need to adapt them, this offers some good alternatives. Most of the recipes are light on herbs and spices, and adding them or increasing the amounts greatly improves the low salt versions of these recipes. The chicken recipes are particularly good, with a Dill-Lemon Chicken, a Twenty-Clove (Garlic) Chicken, and a Southwestern Chicken which are delicious, though there is a significant loss of texture to the meat when skinless, boneless chicken is used in place of chicken breasts with bones and skin.
Very low fat meat cuts (pork tenderloin or pork top loin, flank steak or extra lean beef cubes, for example), do not result in the cut-with-a-fork, fall-off-the-bone meats one is accustomed to with slow cooking--they remain quite firm (and rather dry) even with hours of cooking. Longer cooking of the pork, especially, creates an almost pasty texture, and the slow cooker's original purpose of tenderizing a tough, fatty cut is lost. This may be one of the reasons that the soups, which are imaginative, are the largest and most interesting section here. Lovers of slow cookery may prefer to use their own recipes and seasonings for favorites, checking here for ways to cut down on fat and salt and perhaps getting ideas for new ways of cooking. Crock-Pot Soup Recipes: 53 Delicious, Healthy and Super Easy Slow Cooker Soup and Stew Recipes Review

Crock-Pot Soup Recipes: 53 Delicious, Healthy and Super Easy Slow Cooker Soup and Stew Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is obviously focused on a very specific topic: not just crock pot recipes, but crock pot recipes specifically for soups and stews. When you consider how specific that topic is, 53 recipes is A LOT: you'll have more than enough to choose from here. The book is also very wide-ranging in the style of recipes: Asian, Costa Rican, Southern, Mexican, etc, there are a ton of different cooking styles represented here and LOTS of variety.
The author also devotes a section at the beginning of the book to go over crock pot basics, how to use a crock pot with various types of ingredients, etc, which will be nice for anyone who's new to using a crock pot (or who has been using one wrong up to this point :) )
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book to ALL cooking enthusiasts, because it's on such a specific topic. But if you're interested specifically in crock pot cooking, I think this book is an amazing resource.

The Everything Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook (Everything Series) Review

The Everything Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook (Everything Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Everything Healthy Slow Cooker Cookbook is a welcome addition to my cookbook library. Other crock-pot cookbooks I've checked out from the library rely on processed foods and many unhealthy ingredients that I wouldn't want to serve my family, but this cookbook emphasizes fresh produce, dairy, and meat products that I can buy in the grocery store. Amazingly, this cookbook has two vegetarian chapters - one vegetarian and one for vegan recipes (no dairy products, eggs, or meat). There are other vegan and vegetarian recipes throughout the book, too - not just in those two chapters. I really appreciate that because we entertain vegan friends and it's great to have something delicious to serve them rather than the same-old pasta they get everywhere.

I've tried five recipes from this book so far and every one of them has been really tasty and so easy. (Great to use the slow cooker in summer when you don't want to overheat your house.) The Hot and Sour soup tasted even better than the soup at our local Chinese take-out place. The Strawberry Pandowdy is a really different dessert idea for my family and tasted so good with vanilla ice cream. The Turkey White Chili is so good that I made it twice already. I brought Baba Ganoush and Creamy Low-Fat Spinach Artichoke Dip to a potluck and both were huge hits, gone in minutes. I am going to give this cookbook and a slow cooker to my friends who are getting married this fall. I am looking forward to using this cookbook again and again. Highly recommended to everyone who has a slow cooker.

Cooking Light Comfort Food: Home-Cooked, Delicious Classics Made Light Review

Cooking Light Comfort Food: Home-Cooked, Delicious Classics Made Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I avoid most healthy cookbooks, mainly because I don't believe in dieting per se, but also because most of them are full of bland "diet foods" or recipes full of fake substitute ingredients. But Cooking Light has always earned my respect because they offer good food that's tweaked just enough to make it healthier while preserving the flavor and integrity of the original dish, and not insulting my intelligence by trying to convince me that a piece of boiled chicken and a dry, undressed salad, with a glass of chemical-sweetened diet soda on the side, make for a delicious meal.
This latest Cooking Light book does not disappoint. As the title suggests, these are recipes for dishes that most of us, if we're honest with ourselves, absolutely love - comfort food. You'll find timeless favorites ranging from chicken and dumplings and pot roast with mashed potatoes, to sweet rolls and key lime pie. And the best part is, the changes do not come from things like artificial sweeteners and unsatisfying tricks like using chicken broth to make mashed potatoes. The recipes call for real ingredients, used in sensible moderation and smaller amounts than the original recipes. Things like butter, sugar, and low and no-fat dairy products. If, like me, you prefer not to use the non-fat stuff, it's easily switched out for the reduced-fat variety, with little change in per-serving fat or calories.
The smart, sensible balance achieved by this book makes eating healthier a do-able goal, far easier than the fake ingredients and deprivation found elsewhere. Hungry girl? Nope, a satisfied woman. Highly recommended.

The Best Make-Ahead Recipe Review

The Best Make-Ahead Recipe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you don't own "Cover & Bake," this a five-star book; skip down to "Here's What I Like ..."
I think this may be the lowest rating I've ever given to a CI book (I own seven in the Best series and a handful of others.) If you own "Cover & Bake," you have many of the recipes in this book, hence the low rating.
Some of the shared recipes include:
Slow Cooker Favorites (5 of the 17 are shared with C&B)
-Pot Roast
-Beef Stew
-Brisket
-Chili
-Beef & Barley Soup
Sides (There are two shared recipes)
Casseroles (There are more variations of the recipes in this book) both books share:
-Baked Ziti
-Lasagna
-Manicotti
-Mac & Cheese
-Chicken Enchiladas
-Chicken Pot Pie
-Beef Pot Pie
-Tamale Pie
-Shepherd's Pie
Lamb & Eggplant Moussaka
-Chicken & Rice Casserole
Breakfast & Breads (only the bread recipes are unique to this book. What irks me is that the same photo is used for the start of the breakfast chapters in each book.) Shared recipes are:
-24-Hour Omelet
-French Toast Casserole
-Breakfast Strata
Here is what I like about the book
-TOC in each chapter
-The Double-Duty Cooking Chapter is great -- cook a little extra now for tomorrow's dish that won't taste like leftovers
-All of the stews and the majority of the casseroles can be made ahead and frozen. Outside of those categories, you'll find maybe 10 additional recipes that can be frozen.
-Desserts
-Make-Ahead Holiday Menus
If you don't have "Cover & Bake" get this book. When reviewed in isolation, it is a five-star book. If you're deciding which to choose, this book has a range of recipes across appetizers, sides, main courses and desserts. If you're looking for a complete make-ahead meal, this book is the way to go.

Fix-It And Forget-It Big Cookbook: 1400 Best Slow Cooker Recipes Review

Fix-It And Forget-It Big Cookbook: 1400 Best Slow Cooker Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With 1,400 recipes, the Fix-It and Forget-It Big Cookbook is the only book for slow cooker recipes you'll need. It will be your go-to cookbook when you're in a hurry for dinner. The recipes are SIMPLE: simple ingredients and simple preparation. You can throw together many of the recipes if you have 20 minutes before you run off to work in the morning. You are likely to have most of the ingredients in your kitchen -- no exotic, hard-to-find ingredients in this cookbook.
You also will save grocery money. Many recipes call for less expensive cuts of meat since cooking at a very low temperature all day will make meats as tender and juicy as the more expensive cuts.
The recipes are laid out in an easy-to-read style that not only identifies the serving number, but you'll know how long it takes to prep the ingredients. The directions are step-by-step and are very easy to follow.
Two features from the cookbook are worth mentioning. Recipes that are healthier and lighter are marked in the corner. You can use these recipes for a healthier meal (or appetizer, soup, etc.), and they are just as convenient and quick to put together as the traditional ones. Another standout feature is the surprisingly helpful little hints that author Phylllis Pellman Good put on the bottom of every other page or so. Though most hints are slow cooker-related, other hints are surprisingly helpful when preparing any type of food. At 658 pages of recipes, you'll find loads of hints -- worth reading on their own.
I also was intrigued with many of the appetizer recipes. Does anyone ever think, "I need an appetizer. I'll pull out my slow cooker"? Not me! But I have to say, "Irresistible Cheesy Hot-Bean Dip" and "Fruit Salsa" were recipes I marked for future party bring-alongs.
People like me who love to cook usually have scores of cookbooks on the shelf, and we probably regularly use only a couple of them. The Fix-It and Forget-It Big Cookbook will be the the only slow cooker recipe book on your shelf. It has all the recipes you'll ever need for slow cooking.

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two (NYM Series) Review

Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Recipes for Two (NYM Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this after reading a recipe in our local newspaper taken from the book. It has some wonderful, original recipes, with clear instructions, and, even better, guidance about how to buy a small slow cooker and what you can do with it once you have it.
Most of the recipes are too large for the really small 1 1/2 quart slow cooker, though a few fit that size. Fortunately, each recipe includes a recommended cooker size in the instructions.
My only disappointment was that some of the recipes call for ingredients I cannot possibly find in my rural area grocery stores. But if you live in a city or metropolitan area you can probably find all the ingredients.
Finally, do not buy the "350 recipes" cookbook Amazon tries to bundle with this one in the "buy both" listing near the top of the page. It's really awful - I've reviewed it separately.
If you have a 3 quart slow cooker, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

Crockery Cookery Review

Crockery Cookery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My mom had this book, and every recipe I make from it has that nostalgic taste of home. I especially love the breads and beverages -- things that other slow-cooker books leave out.
However, I find myself using these recipes mostly for weekend entertaining rather than on work nights. A substantial number of these dishes aren't designed for the dump-it-in-and-run-to-work crowd; they require six hours on low heat or the addition of extra ingredients halfway through the cooking time.
Devoted cooks looking for tasty long-simmered flavors will be delighted, but there just aren't enough dishes here that can be made on the working-family schedule for me to give this the rating that the flavors deserve.

A New York Times bestseller, this cookbook established Mable Hoffman as a premier cooking enthusiast--well-deserved praise for one who has spent decades extolling the benefits of slow cooking. Her easy and affordable recipes for appetizers, soups, and main dishes are designed to bring out that "simmered-in" flavor that only slow cooking can provide. In addition to the new recipes, this edition contains many others that have been revised to reduce fat and calories.--This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

I studiously avoided learning to cook for 50+ years but a friend who's very health conscious recommended trying a slow cooker. This cookbook gave me the additional boost I needed. Finlayson is very knowledgeable about nutrition, and somehow manages to make it interesting to read about. Plus, she gives tips on what to prepare the night before, so you can set up the crock pot in the morning, turn it on, and have a great meal by the time you get home. I love the Thai Pumpkin Soup, which has become a favorite in our household. If you're trying WeightWatchers point system, this has an abundance of good recipes.

I'm not much for creating my own recipes. I think I have the skill to do it, but I simply haven't the time, particularly not for a slow cooker (isn't the point of having one, after all, that you have so much to do, see, experience that you don't want to spend anymore time than necessary in the kitchen?). So-o-o it was with some trepidation that I ordered this book. Truth be told, it was to bump the order over $25, so S&H would be free. Imagine my delight and surprise when I found actual recipes inside, not meat-or-veg-with-canned-soup-poured-over. In particular I love the recipe for a tamale pie, with cornbread crust and cheese topping. As with any slow cooker, the special taste you get from high direct heat is missing, but most of these recipes are juicy, stewy things with delightful combinations of flavors. Best of all, each is accompanied by a nutritional analysis which allows me to cipher Weight Watchers points. I have found that one of the things I miss most about living alone is opening the apartment door after work and smelling -- what? -- furniture polish? something gone bad in the trash? This book and my slow cooker let me open the door to the delightful aroma of a supper I know I will enjoy. Buy it; you'll like it.
