The Expanding Light Cookbook : Vegetarian Favorites from California's Premier Yoga Retreat Review

The Expanding Light Cookbook : Vegetarian Favorites from California's Premier Yoga Retreat

I really loved this cookbook. The author claims that all of the recipes have been incredibly well-tested on literally thousands of guests at The Expanding Light yoga & meditation retreat, and I have to say that I believe her. Everything that I've tried to make has turned out really well. And the best thing is that these very tasty recipes are light, low-fat and healthy. While not a strictly vegan cookbook, very little dairy and eggs are used. Another really good thing is that because The Expanding Light Retreat has many non-vegetarian guests, these recipes are designed to satisfy the hunger of confirmed meat-eaters--they're not just for vegetarians. Also, in the introduction, there is a very interesting interview with the author where she delves into the special nature of cooking food for a spiritual retreat and the importance of cooking with a "raised consciousness" to create great tasting meals.

The Inner Art of Vegetarianism : Spiritual Practices for Body Review

The Inner Art of Vegetarianism : Spiritual Practices for Body

I'm really not given to new-age books, so I started reading this one without much enthusiasm -- was I ever won over! I admire Carol Adams so much after reading this. She has struggled with living in a fully conscious way that overcomes mental and emotional obstacles and opens the way for both productivity and inner peace, and her story is inspiring and instructive. I just bought the companion Meditations book and am now working my way through it. I really can't say enough about this book. It's truly fortifying and worth a read.

In her beautifully composed and thoughtful new book, author and activist Carol Adams explores the inner life of spiritualgrowth with the outer life of practical compassion. She shows how thereasons for becoming a vegetarian (to promote health, care for otheranimals, and express concern for the environment) are deeply wedded tospiritual practice.Adams reveals how the practice of creating mindfulness anddisciplining the midn meshes with becoming an activist fornonviolence, and shows how in our busy and stressed-out world it isessential to sustain and replenish the soul through spiritualdiscipline.Adams discusses breath awareness, meditation, yoga, journaling, and dreamwork as examples of how to keep true to yourselfand your beliefs, maintain your mental equilibrium, and prepare trulydelicious meals with thoughfulness and care. This is an essentialbook for all those who wish to have their soul nourished and followthe spiritual path of vegetarianism.

1,000 Vegetarian Recipes Review

1,000 Vegetarian Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My mother in-law bought me this book shortly after I married her son. I think she was a little worried that he wouldn't eat well because he married a vegetarian. Our first year of marriage I used only this cookbook and a few recipes my mom had given me. I can't tell you how exciting it was to sit down, read through a section of the book, write a grocery list for the items I would need, write out a dinner menu for the whole week and then call my friends to tell them what I was fixing on each night and ask them what sounded good to them so they could join us for dinner. I did this for several months until my evenings were filled with other activities. (Eating was definitely an activity when it came to using this book.) I have enjoyed every recipe I have used from this book. And they're so easy!! Here are a few of my recommendations (I don't have page numbers in front of me): The Barbecue Red Beans, Corn and Rice; Manicotti; Fajitas; Falafel; Hummus; Black Bean Hummus; and so many more. My only problem with some of the recipes is that I'm not a big salt eater and so I changed a few of the measurements on some recipes. And also, because she uses a lot of cheese (which is my favorite food) I gained a lot of weight that year. I do love the fact that she doesn't suggest using lowfat or non-fat foods to make the recipes but use caution. This is a "must have" cookbook if you love eating really good food!!

Not just for vegetarians, there's never been a better time for this award-winning book! Carol Gelles, one of the best-known authorities on the subject, offers hundreds of appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, and more, proving that vegetarian cuisine is anything but boring. The flavor combinations are limitless, drawing on the ingredients and spices from every international cuisine. Discussions of vegetables, grains, beans, and soyfoods are interspersed throughout the recipes, making the book easy enough for beginners to follow. And every recipe is coded as lacto-vegetarian (some dairy products), ovo-vegetarian (some egg products), or vegan (made without dairy or meat products).

This cookbook is easy to use with satisfying meals for the vegetarian or meat eater alike. There are no weird, hard to find ingredients which is a complaint I see come up a lot in reviews of vegetarian cookbooks. The Maple Sesame Tofu recipe made me change my mind about tofu from bearable to staple meal. This book is not written by the newest hollywood star gone vegan or the premier vegetarian chef but it is written by a cook who knows food on a spiritual level and it would be a great addition to your collection. These are recipes you would use everyday.

The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes Carnivores Will Devour Review

The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes Carnivores Will Devour
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I know ... you like meat. Me too. I grew up thinking beef is what's for dinner... and lunch and breakfast. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Or at least there wasn't. Now, I can't help but know better. Sure, there's the health reason in a physical (weight) sense. But I know now there are also environmental impacts, serious issues with how the meat is processed (from sanitary conditions to inhumane kills to worker abuses). But change is hard and meat is yummy, and going meatless means giving up something I love and that raised the right way can still be good for you. So I just refuse to do that. I don't hate vegetables; I just love meat. (Even Whoville would revolt if The Grinch carved roast beets instead of roast beast.) And those vegetarian books? They just DO NOT understand this. They are meatless on a mission -- perhaps delicious but not relatable to a guy who believes bacon just may be nature's candy. Kim O'Donnel asks us meat eaters to try something different: A break from meat once a week. And she has created an AMAZING set of tasty recipes that are good for our bodies and the planet too. I saw an early version of this book and now have the actual copy and to date and I can give the ultimate rave to the Falafel "Burgers," Slurpy Asian Noodle, and Pepita Crusted Tofu Cutlets: My family (all meat eaters) had them for dinner and we not only loved them and wanted them again -- we did NOT sneak a ham sandwich later because we were unfulfilled. Thanks Kim O'Donnel! THIS is change we meat eaters can believe in.

Vegan Meals for One or Two: Your Own Personal Recipes Review

Vegan Meals for One or Two: Your Own Personal Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was drawn to Vegan Meals since it was aimed at recipes for just a few people. I am the only vegan in my house, and I found this to be very helpful. It gave me ideas on good, quick meals, as well as what to keep stocked up on in my kitchen and pantry.
The downside of this book was that I found the recipes I tried to be kind of unappetizing. And one that I tried (something with potatoes and kale) had the wrong amount of pepper in it, and I ended up ruining all of my work and had no dinner. I think that in the future, I will have to try adding my own touches to the recipes to make them better for myself.
The resources in the front and back of this book are very helpful. I found a ton of simple, quick, and delicious meals and snacks to try, many of which I use almost every day. I didn't try all of the recipes, but the few I tried I didn't like. So, I guess it's up to you to venture out and try these; after all, I could just have a weird taste in food.

Cooking Light Vegetarian Cookbook Review

Cooking Light Vegetarian Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own several books in the Cooking Light series, and normally just remove the meat ingredients or substitute with pasta, rice, or TVP. I thought this one would be a great addition. WRONG. This cookbook is obviously catered to the "occasional" vegetarian. Several recipes call for vegetable OR chicken broth, and a few of them have Worcestershire listed as an ingredient. Anyone who cooks truly vegetarian would know that Worcestershire has anchovies in it and is thus NOT a vegetarian ingredient. All of the recipes rely heavily on dairy and eggs. No vegan options. I'm very, very disappointed in this cookbook.

The Candle Cafe Cookbook: More Than 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant Review

The Candle Cafe Cookbook: More Than 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a total of 11 vegan cookbooks, and the candle cafe cookbook is the one I always use. I have been so disappointed in other vegan cookbooks because they either have hard-to-find ingredients, are too time-consuming to make, and are bland and boring. This cookbook is none of that! Almost every ingredient can be found at your local supermarket so it's not too expensive to purchase these items. Secondly, being a mom to a toddler gives me very little time to spend in the kitchen, and this book offers delicious meals that are easy and quick to prepare. And most of all, everything I have made from this book has been just like eating a gourmet meal! This is a MUST HAVE for everyone who is vegan or is even thinking about trying a vegan meal. I made the lemon tofu cheesecake with blood-orange glaze, and gave some to my carnivorous husband. He is the type of person who won't touch tofu with a ten-foot pole. And he ate every bite of it and thought it was great. I also made the chocolate cake with chocolate ganache frosting, and everyone LOVED it! Also, recently I prepared the seitan piccata with white wine and caper sauce. I only had the "chicken-style" seitan and used that instead. I have to tell you that it tasted like fried chicken in a wonderful brown gravy sauce! It was excellent! This cookbook is one of those "everyday" cookbooks, but with gourmet flavor. I am not a woman who likes to cook much, and I do not have much experience in the kitchen, but being vegan I have to cook my own meals once in a while, and I have been using this book every day, and every day I have a new favorite dish! I have been writing disappointing reviews on every cookbook I've tried, but this one I would give 10 stars if I could. If you are even thinking of buying this book, please do. You will not be disappointed!

Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts (Moosewood Collection) Review

Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts (Moosewood Collection)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love a cookbook that is more than just a collection of recipes. The recipes in this cookbook all start with some background about where the recipe came from, how it can be used, and other ideas for how to serve it. This makes the book fun to browse through. Also, the book is well-organized and well indexed. There's even an ingredients index so you can look in your pantry and pick a dessert based on what you have on hand. The variety of recipes is good: some are easy, some are more complicated, some are good for kids, some are fancy for adults. I've tried several things from each chapter of the book and everything has turned out well. Basics are included, such as a flawless pie crust recipe, as well as more unusual desserts such as Pink Chiffon Cake. Another bonus is the multicultural aspect of the book. There are several recipes from the Middle East, and some from Italy, Greece, too. These Mediterranean desserts tend to be less sweet than what our US taste buds usually like, and I've found them great for informal suppers and luncheons. (By the way, the name "Moosewood" in this cookbook does not mean "healthy"! There's plenty of sugar and other good stuff in these recipes!) I make desserts only when entertaining, so I usually have to take the risk of trying new recipes with guests, but with this cookbook I never have any worry about whether it will be a hit or not. This book has proven itself to be a Dessert Bible for me!

Golden Door Cooks at Home: Favorite Recipes from the Celebrated Spa Review

Golden Door Cooks at Home: Favorite Recipes from the Celebrated Spa
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent cookbook for anyone who is interested in creating an elegant, healthy menu or lifestyle. Dean's recipes are clearly explained and filled with wholesome, fresh ingredients. There are simple recipes (like preparing perfect vegetables) and more complicated ones, including healthful vegetarian, vegan, fish, seafood and meat selections. Because more and more people would prefer to be served foods that are both tasty and good for them, I have used this cookbook to prepare both lunch and dinner menus. Each time, my guests (both men and women) were delighted by the flavors and really pleased to learn that they could have a second helping without worry (especially the men!) The crab cakes on roasted pineapple with sauce remoulade is a huge success - filling, refined, and luxurious - you would never know that the sauce is made with silky tofu. Wow, so guilt free! If you have hungry guests, it's easy to add a soup or pasta course and still keep the menu very healthy. This book is also helpfully organized. A number of recipe selections include information for an entire course, and complete nutritional information on each one can be found in a table in the back of the book, so menu choices can be thoughtful and informed.
Another reason I like Golden Door Cooks at Home so much is that it is an inspirational guide into the Golden Door lifestyle, a window into the original Golden Door Spa founded 50 years ago by visionary Deborah Szekely. There are articles and images that motivate, inspire and, for those who have visited the Spa, invoke cherished, happy memories. I enjoy giving it as a gift as a way of sharing my wonderful experiences as a guest at the Golden Door.
