Cooking Light Way to Cook Vegetarian: The Complete Visual Guide to Healthy Vegetarian & Vegan Cooking Review

Cooking Light Way to Cook Vegetarian: The Complete Visual Guide to Healthy Vegetarian and Vegan Cooking

In the recipe for Polenta with Spinach, Black Beans and Goat Cheese, the instructions call for boiling the polenta for 3 minutes, but the fact that the ingredient list does not specify "instant" polenta would leave the novice cook with raw polenta if they purchased regular polenta which takes 20 to 30 minutes to cook.
I tried the recipe for corn dumplings made with masa harina. The recipe calls for a 3 minute cooking time. They were still raw inside after 15 minutes.
In the recipe for Baked Falafel Sandwiches with Yogurt-Tahini Sauce, under falafel ingredients is listed:
2(15.5-ounce)cans chickpeas(garbanzo beans)rinsed and drained
3 cups cooked chickpeas(garbanzo beans)
After these inconsistancies, I lost trust in this book. Too bad, because it is a beautifully laid-out book.

Baking with Agave Nectar: Over 100 Recipes Using Nature's Ultimate Sweetener Review

Baking with Agave Nectar: Over 100 Recipes Using Nature's Ultimate Sweetener
Average Reviews:

I was really excited when I found out this book was being published, because I've only been using Agave Nectar for a few months and have had a hard time finding/adapting recipes. I preordered it months ago. My first time reading through the book had me considering sending it back. What I was hoping for was a collection of recipes that had been adapted to use Agave Nectar, but had familiar ingredients. The recipes call for things that are hard to find at a regular grocery store (at least in the area where I live). Barley flour, quinoa flour, and silken tofu are not items normally stocked in my kitchen.

So far, I've baked 3 different things from the cookbook. I've found that the cooking times given are too long, especially for the lemon bars. The flourless chocolate cake recipe also has errors, as it leaves out a step in combining ingredients. I'll keep trying different recipes, but I don't have high hopes that this is a cookbook I'll use every time I bake, and when I do use it, I'll make sure to set my timer for a lot shorter time than the recipes call for.

The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes Carnivores Will Devour Review

The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes Carnivores Will Devour
Average Reviews:

I know ... you like meat. Me too. I grew up thinking beef is what's for dinner... and lunch and breakfast. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Or at least there wasn't. Now, I can't help but know better. Sure, there's the health reason in a physical (weight) sense. But I know now there are also environmental impacts, serious issues with how the meat is processed (from sanitary conditions to inhumane kills to worker abuses). But change is hard and meat is yummy, and going meatless means giving up something I love and that raised the right way can still be good for you. So I just refuse to do that. I don't hate vegetables; I just love meat. (Even Whoville would revolt if The Grinch carved roast beets instead of roast beast.) And those vegetarian books? They just DO NOT understand this. They are meatless on a mission -- perhaps delicious but not relatable to a guy who believes bacon just may be nature's candy. Kim O'Donnel asks us meat eaters to try something different: A break from meat once a week. And she has created an AMAZING set of tasty recipes that are good for our bodies and the planet too. I saw an early version of this book and now have the actual copy and to date and I can give the ultimate rave to the Falafel "Burgers," Slurpy Asian Noodle, and Pepita Crusted Tofu Cutlets: My family (all meat eaters) had them for dinner and we not only loved them and wanted them again -- we did NOT sneak a ham sandwich later because we were unfulfilled. Thanks Kim O'Donnel! THIS is change we meat eaters can believe in.

The Whole Foods Market Cookbook: A Guide ot Natural Foods with 350 Recipes Review

The Whole Foods Market Cookbook: A Guide ot Natural Foods with 350 Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a regular shopper at Whole Foods Market for years and I've been waiting for the company to put out a cookbook with some of their own great recipes, like Ed's Tantalizing Tofu, for the home cook. So when this book finally appeared, I was one of the first in line for it. Unfortunately, it's not what I'd hoped for.
I have no complaints about the ingredients list, that's why I shop at WFM -- beautiful fresh, organic produce, all varieties of grain and pasta products, and a wide assortment of gourmet and International foods not found in other stores. For many of my favorite cookbooks [like Nina Simonds' Asian Noodles] Whole Foods Market provides one-stop shopping.
The problem I have with the book is that of the half-dozen or so recipes I tried, I had to make repairs midway through the making, or the flavors or ingredients didn't come together as I expected, or the end product just plain didn't taste good. I was left with beautiful food made into lousy meals.
If you're looking for great-tasting recipes tailor-made for WFM shoppers, I'm afraid you'll have to wait a little while longer. This one should be sent back to the test kitchen.

Vegan Meals for One or Two: Your Own Personal Recipes Review

Vegan Meals for One or Two: Your Own Personal Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was drawn to Vegan Meals since it was aimed at recipes for just a few people. I am the only vegan in my house, and I found this to be very helpful. It gave me ideas on good, quick meals, as well as what to keep stocked up on in my kitchen and pantry.
The downside of this book was that I found the recipes I tried to be kind of unappetizing. And one that I tried (something with potatoes and kale) had the wrong amount of pepper in it, and I ended up ruining all of my work and had no dinner. I think that in the future, I will have to try adding my own touches to the recipes to make them better for myself.
The resources in the front and back of this book are very helpful. I found a ton of simple, quick, and delicious meals and snacks to try, many of which I use almost every day. I didn't try all of the recipes, but the few I tried I didn't like. So, I guess it's up to you to venture out and try these; after all, I could just have a weird taste in food.

The Candle Cafe Cookbook: More Than 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant Review

The Candle Cafe Cookbook: More Than 150 Enlightened Recipes from New York's Renowned Vegan Restaurant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a total of 11 vegan cookbooks, and the candle cafe cookbook is the one I always use. I have been so disappointed in other vegan cookbooks because they either have hard-to-find ingredients, are too time-consuming to make, and are bland and boring. This cookbook is none of that! Almost every ingredient can be found at your local supermarket so it's not too expensive to purchase these items. Secondly, being a mom to a toddler gives me very little time to spend in the kitchen, and this book offers delicious meals that are easy and quick to prepare. And most of all, everything I have made from this book has been just like eating a gourmet meal! This is a MUST HAVE for everyone who is vegan or is even thinking about trying a vegan meal. I made the lemon tofu cheesecake with blood-orange glaze, and gave some to my carnivorous husband. He is the type of person who won't touch tofu with a ten-foot pole. And he ate every bite of it and thought it was great. I also made the chocolate cake with chocolate ganache frosting, and everyone LOVED it! Also, recently I prepared the seitan piccata with white wine and caper sauce. I only had the "chicken-style" seitan and used that instead. I have to tell you that it tasted like fried chicken in a wonderful brown gravy sauce! It was excellent! This cookbook is one of those "everyday" cookbooks, but with gourmet flavor. I am not a woman who likes to cook much, and I do not have much experience in the kitchen, but being vegan I have to cook my own meals once in a while, and I have been using this book every day, and every day I have a new favorite dish! I have been writing disappointing reviews on every cookbook I've tried, but this one I would give 10 stars if I could. If you are even thinking of buying this book, please do. You will not be disappointed!
