The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More Review

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I suppose that this book is for people who are already into whole foods. To people who aren't accustomed to such foods might read ingredients like Lecithin granules, Asorbic Acid, Sprilla and go "What the heck is that?" But, I'm weird, and I already have all that stuff. :)
It's also for people who have a good blender (obviously) and preferably a juicer, though store bought juices are fine. You just get more health benefits from fresh juices. And I'm glad the Author does understand that not everyone has a juicer.
That being said though, I've always enjoyed making healthful and delicious juices and smoothies. But the few other books I have, mainly the juice books, the recipes are a bit too fancy for me. Not to mention expensive. Great for entertaining guests I suppose, but just for me? Nah. Smoothies, for the most part I've just made up on my own. But realizing how many calories I was consuming with them woke me up a bit. I LOVE that this book has not only very yummy smoothies, but nutritional info for each one! I also love that they are all designed for specific health needs. Losing weight, Working out, Pregnancy, Boosting Immunity, etc. It also has a section for kids. What a wonderful way to get more healthy foods in my son's belly without his knowing it because they taste so damn awesome!
I love this book. And even though, as a few have complained, there are no pictures (I always look for cook books with beautiful photos) - this is the only Smoothie Book I need.
A side note about the cost of smoothies and juicing - I think this book saves you money. It has you making ice cubes from strong teas or fresh juices to add into future smoothies. So in my freezer, I have it stocked with labeled freezer bags of Beet Juice, Watermelon Carrot Juice, Coconut Milk. Today I planned on making up some Chai Tea Ice Cubes for the Chai Smoothie later. Juicing yourself in small amounts and freezing them really cuts down on the cost of produce. You use less, and your produce doesn't spoil before you get a chance to use it all.
Even still, if I see an apple looking a little sad. I just juice it instead of throwing it away.
Apples are also a good cheap filler for juicing. Any produce on the expensive side, I juice with apples to use less of the more expensive produce. The taste isn't changed much, and it adds fiber and other nutrients.

Foods That Heal Companion Cookbook: Showing You the Light at the End of the Refrigerator Review

Foods That Heal Companion Cookbook: Showing You the Light at the End of the Refrigerator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent work. The author cites all-natural methods
for healing. For instance, appendicitis may be prevented with
a high fiber diet. Arthritis may occur due to food sensitivities;
such as, nightshade plant derivatives, pepper and eggplant.
The Bingham Regimen consists of 16 hours of bedrest, 8 glasses
of water daily, an increase in protein, fish, lean meats,
nuts and seeds, organic fruits/veggies, no alcohol or tobacco,
2000 ml. Vit C, 3 glasses of raw certified milk, Vit D 1000 IU,
fish oil, pantothenic acidic foods, royal jelly, soy, lentil,
alfalfa, peanuts, bee pollen and walnuts-all aimed at arthritic
conditions. Gallstones may be minimized with Vit E.
Vitamin A and B2 and bilberry are noted for eye problems.
Cramps may be controlled with Ca., Mg., K(potassium-deficiency),
B6, Vit C and Vit E.
A "Vitamin C protocol" consists of rose hips, guava, black
currant, green peppers, spinach, papaya, tomato and squash.
Cod liver oil, tuna, egg yolk, cheese, milk and bee pollen
are natural sources of Vitamin D.
This book has a wealth of information pertinent to the treatment
and control of a variety of chronic and painful conditions.
As people get older, they no longer get diseases that tend to
go away with an overnight treatment. Instead, many conditions
require ongoing treatment, maintenance and diagnostic tests
before a meaningful remission can be accomplished.
This work is well worth the cost. It should be in every health
maintenance library.

Light and Healthy Holidays (First Place 4 Health Bible Study Series) Review

Light and Healthy Holidays (First Place 4 Health Bible Study Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now is a great time to order your "Light and Healthy Holidays" devotional to either do on your own, or with your FP4H group. The group that I lead is going to meet six times: the three Wednesdays before Thanksgiving and the three Wednesdays before Christmas. The six weeks of devotionals in this book fit into that time frame perfectly.
This is not a standard FP4H study. Each "day" in the book includes a short devotional reading, then a section for personal reflection and application, almost like a journal. There is not a series of questions and Bible verses to be looked up as in the regular Bible studies. There are memory verses and Live-It Trackers for each week, as usual. In the back of the book are menu & recipe helps for the season, including plans for your Thanksgiving and Christmas Day meals.
Here are the themes and memory verses for each week:
1. Giving Thanks (I Thessalonians 5:18)
2. Goodness and Love (I Chronicles 16:34)
3. Great Joy (Luke 2:10-11)
4. Come to Worship (Matthew 2:1-2)
5. Be Made New (Ephesians 4:22-24)
6. A New Heart (Ezekiel 36:26)
This year, let's have a healthy AND celebratory holiday season!

So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week Review

So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this book and read through it. It is even better the first one!
When I got Ellie's first book, I was thrilled to know that healthy food could still taste good.
However, there were still some recipes that I wished I had in Ellie's version.
This book definitely fills that hole. Ellie recreated many dishes in her healthy versions, and some of them are the ones people usually think to be impossible to be healthy. I can't wait until try every one of them.
Another thing that I like about this book is, the recipes were divided into breakfast, lunch, and dinner and each of them were again divided into slow and fast. So, you could pick the recipe that fits your schedule.
Fast lunch has recipes for lunch boxes, so as a working girl who tries to eat healthy, I couldn't be happier. Thanks Ellie for another great book. You are the best!!

MEXICAN LIGHT PB Review

MEXICAN LIGHT PB
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of the dishes I've cooked in the last few months have been recipes from this excellent book. If you've used Shulman's other cookbooks, you'll recognize the style: chatty writing, bold flavors (e.g., lots of garlic and cilantro), a mixture of vegetarian and meat dishes, careful instructions in the recipes, a nutritional summary for each recipe, and a separate chapter on unusual ingredients. Many of the dishes in this book can be made in 30 minutes to an hour, though some are more complex. And while the food may be good for you, it tastes terrific.
Don't expect this book to be an authoritative survey of Mexican cooking. There's no mole poblano, or even a burrito recipe. Some recipes are fairly authentic, others merely "inspired" by Mexican ingredients. Since the recipes she concocts are often as good as the classics she leaves out, that's a minor drawback.

Light-hearted Seafood Review

Light-hearted Seafood
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A useful book with 135 pages of recipes, with additional information on nutritional and health benefits, preparation tips (e.g., shucking an oyster), and safety instructions for the cook and angler. Recipes are easy and uncluttered, with very tasty results. The book includes separate chapters on appetizers, soups and stews, sandwiches, salads, finfish, shellfish, microwaving, and baking, and special occasions (for example, oyster stuffing and Thanksgiving salmon, an everyone's favorite (?), a Sunday dinner of "Halibut Pot Roast."
One complaint is that there are not enough baked fish recipes (nor are there menu or wine suggestions). However, this is an excellent introduction to the whys and hows of some delicious fish dishes. With numerous tables (including nutritional and texture comparisons, and cooking and grilling techniques), index, and nutritional and diabetic exchange information for each recipe.

Living the G.I. (Glycemic Index) Diet Review

Living the G.I. (Glycemic Index) Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to lose weight so badly that I was prepared to do anything to achieve it, except give up my favourite foods! Then I heard about the GI Diet and ordered the book right away. I found this book very easy to read while being packed with valuable nutritional information. I have never found a healthier more sensible and balanced diet anywhere! This is not just another diet but is really a new way of eating. Most diets fail because you feel deprived or you get tired of weighing or measuring or counting (grams or calories or points...)or you just know they are not healthy. The GI Diet has already made all the calculations for you. All foods are divided into three categories: Red Light, Yellow Light and Green Light (just like the traffic lights). Just eat what is on the Green Light List! (In most cases, as much as you want) The Glycemic Index measures the speed at which you digest food and convert it to glucose. Eating low GI foods causes foods to be digested slowly, leaving you feeling fuller, longer, not causing spikes in your blood sugar levels or causing your pancreas to secrete large amounts of insulin. On this diet, you do best if you eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day.
All the recipes included in the book, that I have tried, have been excellent! The Baked Chocolate Mousse, the rice pudding, and the granola bars alone, got me through the first few weeks. I especially like this diet because I have lost 50 pounds ( and my husband has lost 57) and because it promotes Good Health, not just weight loss.
I've lost weight on other diets before, but always regained the weight because I never really understood 'Maintenance'. This time I get it!
I finally understand how good food promotes health while preventing disease, while a poor diet, with lots of white flour, white sugar and processed foods, puts your health at risk. The biggest bonus of being on the GI Diet, is that after a few weeks, my cravings stopped! It was like breaking an addiction! (Chocolate was my drug of choice) Now my body only gets the best fuel, and my high blood pressure and cholesterol scores all fell into place!
If you are really ready to lose weight, if you want to get control of your eating habits, this is the best, easiest, healthiest way to do it.

The easiest diet going is now even easier--and tastier. Off to an explosive start, The G.I. Diet quickly landed on New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, and required five quick printings (for a total of 190,000 copies) to keep pace with demand after national publicity discovered the "Canadian miracle diet" (Woman's World). Now, continuing to build on the nutritional wisdom of the glycemic index, Rick Gallop follows up with the essential companion--a cookbook and strategy guide for living the G.I. Diet.Organized around the simple, intuitive principle of green-, yellow-, and red-light foods--if you can follow a traffic light, you can follow this diet--Living the G.I. Diet gets right into the kitchen with 135 dishes that are as easy to prepare as they are unrecognizable as diet food. Grilled Pesto Salmon with Asparagus. Beef and Eggplant Chili. Garlic Shrimp Pasta. Thai Chicken Curry. Pork Tenderloin with Grainy Mustard and Chive Crust. Cinnamon French Toast. Florentine Frittata. And desserts: Baked Chocolate Mousse, Basmati Rice Pudding, Pecan Brownies--that's right, brownies. In addition, the book spells out how to lose weight (Phase I) and maintain weight loss (Phase II); how to make G.I. eating a family affair; navigating holidays, restaurants, vacation eating; and exploring the psychological and emotional aspects of food and food cravings--everything you need to stay on this proven track.

Golden Door Cooks at Home: Favorite Recipes from the Celebrated Spa Review

Golden Door Cooks at Home: Favorite Recipes from the Celebrated Spa
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent cookbook for anyone who is interested in creating an elegant, healthy menu or lifestyle. Dean's recipes are clearly explained and filled with wholesome, fresh ingredients. There are simple recipes (like preparing perfect vegetables) and more complicated ones, including healthful vegetarian, vegan, fish, seafood and meat selections. Because more and more people would prefer to be served foods that are both tasty and good for them, I have used this cookbook to prepare both lunch and dinner menus. Each time, my guests (both men and women) were delighted by the flavors and really pleased to learn that they could have a second helping without worry (especially the men!) The crab cakes on roasted pineapple with sauce remoulade is a huge success - filling, refined, and luxurious - you would never know that the sauce is made with silky tofu. Wow, so guilt free! If you have hungry guests, it's easy to add a soup or pasta course and still keep the menu very healthy. This book is also helpfully organized. A number of recipe selections include information for an entire course, and complete nutritional information on each one can be found in a table in the back of the book, so menu choices can be thoughtful and informed.
Another reason I like Golden Door Cooks at Home so much is that it is an inspirational guide into the Golden Door lifestyle, a window into the original Golden Door Spa founded 50 years ago by visionary Deborah Szekely. There are articles and images that motivate, inspire and, for those who have visited the Spa, invoke cherished, happy memories. I enjoy giving it as a gift as a way of sharing my wonderful experiences as a guest at the Golden Door.

The Maximum Energy Cookbook and Natural Food Preparation Manual

The cookbook alone is only $22.99 as listed on their website at www.healthmasters.com. It is very unfair to give this book a rating of 1 star based on a lack of understanding of the product.
They do offer a complete series of cassettes or CDs with the cookbook for $99.99 Tapes or $119.99 CD's, which is reasonable.
All of the Broer products are very beneficial to developing good health.
