Bobby Flay's Boy Gets Grill: 125 Reasons to Light Your Fire Review

Bobby Flay's Boy Gets Grill: 125 Reasons to Light Your Fire
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't get me wrong, I have been a huge Flay fan since 1996, when I used to watch his first show on food network. Despite his recent TV saturation and subsequent swagger and attitude I think he has contributed alot to modern cooking and deserves his popularity. No, I am not a hater - the past 2 years my family has gone to Mesa Grill for my birthday, and I tape his shows every day. I am a big fan. I would be sad to see someone give it this rating, but I am giving this book 2 stars because I am comparing it to what Bobby Flay has done in the past.
If you are a viewer of his "Boy Meets Grill" show on food network, you probably recognize 80% of these dishes, and can easily get them for free on their website. I have seen him hock this Cuban burger on 3 shows as well as his own show and this book. It's a regular hamburger with a piece of swiss cheese and ham, squished with a heavy object. hardly groundbreaking. Other Flay staples are rehashed and rehashed - honey, chipotle(which he tries to disguise as "smoked chile" a few times in this book), jicama, ancho chiles, chicken thighs, the list goes on. 125 recipes? If you consider regular old guacamole and salsa, quesadillas prepared 5 similar ways, and store bought ketchup with a pureed chipotle as 8 recipes (and 8 other quickie drink recipes), then I'm sure he squeaked his way to 125. (notice this book doesn't say "NEW recipes" like 'Boy Meets Grill' did?)
Also although I am not a fool for color photos, this book is primarily black and white with no pictures (actually there are many pictures of HIM - shopping, smiling, serving a drink, lighting a grill...) until the middle 10 pages where you DO see some color, unlike his past few books, yet the price tag is the same as his others.
I will say one positive thing about the format, as it breaks down by course (appetizers, entrees, etc.), then by type of main ingredient (fish, meat, burgers) followed by menu suggestions matching recipes from each course and a loose game plan of what to prepare in advance.
Put it all together and you see a complacent celebrity cookbook author "phoning it in" - a quickie money maker using old ideas placed into another lucrative media. I can see this as exciting for someone who has just stumbled on Bobby Flay for the first time, someone who has yet to encounter the taste of a chipotle pepper or who occasionally watches his shows and is buying a cookbook for the first time. But for those of us who "know" Bobby Flay, this is one falls short, and don't say I didn't warn you. Want a better value? try Flay's BOY MEETS GRILL, Tyler Florence's 'Real Kitchen' or for grilling anything by Steven Raichlen.

Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Cooking Made Light Review

Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade Cooking Made Light

After my stint in one of the big, meal-delivery weight-loss programs, I started to round the bend toward my goal weight. It soon came time for me to manage my weight on my own, with healthy, self-prepared meals. This cookbook made it a no-brainer.
Every recipe has a listing of its nutritional information along with the percentage of vitamins in each meal. Truth be told, I'm not terribly into cooking, but the pictures are fantastic and go a long way to motivating me to cook a meal. The fact that most of these recipes are so easy to make is also a huge plus.
I did find one problem, in that some of the ingredients can be a bit difficult to find. Though, I've been quite successful at substituting similar items whenever I couldn't find what was needed at a local market.
While I could take or leave Sandra Lee's television show, I am very glad to have bought this book. I've made 17 of the recipes, thus far. Not only have I enjoyed them, but my husband and VERY picky 2 year old have loved every single one of these healthy meals, as well.

Everyday Pasta Review

Giada's third entry into the cookbook theater is as good as her first two, and there seems to be no end to her culinary offerings to us. This time, she immerses herself into the somewhat crazy world of pasta and the many "clothes" it wears. Delicious to say the least!
I have to admit that one of the first things that grabs my attention when looking at cookbooks is its presentation; does it make me want to look at because it invites me with with something comfortable and familiar? Or is it something that jazzes up that same familiar look? With it's sharp, fresh, and detailed photography and simple, yet inviting writing, Giada brings to you a compendium of sorts in her ode to pasta.
She begins her introduction with "The Origins of Pasta" then goes into her "Top 10 Pasta-Cooking Tips" which is followed by "Matching Pasta Shapes to Sauces" (I never really thought of how the shape of the pasta actually influences the flavor depending how it attaches to the shape). So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week Review

So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week

I just received this book and read through it. It is even better the first one!
When I got Ellie's first book, I was thrilled to know that healthy food could still taste good.
However, there were still some recipes that I wished I had in Ellie's version.
This book definitely fills that hole. Ellie recreated many dishes in her healthy versions, and some of them are the ones people usually think to be impossible to be healthy. I can't wait until try every one of them.
Another thing that I like about this book is, the recipes were divided into breakfast, lunch, and dinner and each of them were again divided into slow and fast. So, you could pick the recipe that fits your schedule.
Fast lunch has recipes for lunch boxes, so as a working girl who tries to eat healthy, I couldn't be happier. Thanks Ellie for another great book. You are the best!!

30-Minute Get Real Meals: Eat Healthy Without Going to Extremes Review

30-Minute Get Real Meals: Eat Healthy Without Going to Extremes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, low carb has been all the rage for sometime now although the fad seems to be slowing down somewhat. But not before TV's spunkiest cook can put her stamp on low carb as Rachael Ray does in her latest book. At 256 pages this is Rachael's largest book yet. I've never quite been able to get meals done in 30 minutes. i guess it probably helps having good editors and a staff but even at 45 minutes or so I've enjoyed every one of Rachael's books. It's good food where taste is first, not fancy presntation and ingredients that have you haunting exotic food stores to find.
The recipes here are not all that low-carb so don't be put off by thinking it's a diet cook book. It's just another great one from Rachael where carbs are used in moderation, but not at the sacrifice of taste. Call them good-sense carb recipes as opposed to low-carb. There's plenty of bread and pasta to be found inside. With all her books the emphasis is on good food and good food done fast and this one, like the previous ones, is right on the mark. Wonderful Italian and Mexican dishes, burgers, even desserts. And it all comes to you in Rachael's endearing, homey way of writing that comes across so well on TV. With her new publisher now being a part of Random House, the book is much more well-presented than her previous ones. Bolder colors that stand out and just plain look better.
Another winner from Rachael!

Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes Review

Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a big fan of the show since the beginning. This book is a blessing. For a long time I would have to hunt down the recopies on the food network website, print them, lose half of them, etc. This way I have it all in a beautiful glossy hard cover book, written with warmth, personal stories and mouth watering pictures of the dishes.
I have made many of the dishes she features in her book, and not one turned out badly. It all comes out exactly as it's supposed to. That's tricky with some cookbooks, when you just can't get it to be what it's meant to be. Giada's book is divided in these sections:
Antipasti, Sauces, Pasta Polenta and Risotto, Entrees, Contorini (Side Dishes) and Dolci (Desserts)

Some of my favorite recipes I've made are:
Stuffed mushrooms: thank goodness they are so simple to make, because I am being hounded by my boyfriend to make them. Simply amazing.
Simple Bolognese- meaty, fresh, and satisfying, plus you don't have to wonder what was in it. You made it and you know it's clean. Classic recipe that's easy to follow.
Brown Butter sauce - I can still close my eyes and taste the sage and butter, over any meat. Instant dress up to any meal.
Chicken piccata - light, lemony, olivey, simply fantastic.
I can just go on and on, but I don't want to bore anyone. This book is simply super. I don't mind the pictures of her, and if she changed her clothes for every single photo in the book, I would have mistaken it for a Vogue shoot, instead of a cookbook.
Hope you can enjoy it as much as I am. This book is in constant use at my house.

The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life Review

The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ellie Krieger is different from the exercise fanatics and diet gurus out there in that she doesn't promise you'll lose 10 pounds or two inches off your waist if you adhere to a strict regimen over the course of a week. Instead, she provides all the tools you'll need to develop a healthy attitude toward eating that doesn't sacrifice flavor or require intensive labor. The crux of her approach is common-sensical: fresh ingredients, lots of whole grains, reasonable portions. But while the idea seems easy enough, Ellie makes it even simpler by outlining what ingredients to keep in stock (for a quick meal anytime) and what small but oh-so-important finishing touches change a dish from bland into brilliant. So far, I've made about a dozen of the recipes in this book (including 4 alone for one meal), and all have been met with rave reviews from the appreciative attendees. I recommend a meal consisting of the Oven-Fried Chicken, Garlic Fries, Zucchini Parmesan Crisps, and finishing off with the Ricotta Cheesecake with Fresh Raspberries. Let your oven do all the work, and stop worrying about your waistline!
I am a fan of Ellie's television show and completely agree with her food philosophy. If we all learn to love the way food tastes, instead of over-processing and masking it in fats and chemicals, then we can once again relish our meals instead of feeling guilty about them. Ellie will show you how in this book full of great recipes. Not only does she transform comfort foods like mashed potatoes and meatloaf into her better-for-youversions, but she also provides recipes inspired by a variety of cuisines ranging from Asian, Greek, and Middle-Eastern and covering every meal, including side dishes and desserts.
Don't expect a strict plan or any guaranteed weight loss. Ellie herself doesn't tout the "Never" approach and teaches us all that foods belong in three categories: Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely. The main reason most diets fail is because they are unrealistic and too limiting. Ellie's approach is different; it shows you a better way to eat "The Food You Crave." Anyone who wants to learn how to prepare delicious AND healthful foods should pick up a copy of this book!
