The G.I. Diet Cookbook Review

The G.I. Diet Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This diet has really worked for me and I want to add some of my observations. There are some pretty comprehensive reviews on here already so I will not summarize anything from the book to minimize repetition.
Stats on me:
I started in May of 05 and lost 5 pounds a week for the first four weeks. I only lost so much because I was well over 200lb (as a 5'5'' female). After that it was more gradual with plateaus and minor ups and downs. I have gone periods were I was only following it 50% faithfully and did not gain the weight back. I am moderately active: gym two to three times a week (usually for an hour water aerobics class) and I do not have a car so I walk everywhere.
Diet Pro's:
- Its Healthy. No doctor would be concerned if his/her patient ate veggies and balanced whole grains and lean proteins. Worst-case scenario: you try it and don't loose weight, but you will not have hurt your metabolism or raised your cholesterol in doing so.
- Its Not a Gimmick. This is not based on "eat all the bacon and cheese you want" or some other counter-intuitive nonsense. Its principals are in line with what is known and widely accepted in medical science.
- Cuts Cravings and is designed to keep your belly full. With three meals and three snacks a day of slowly digested food I am not hungry. Additionally, keeping my blood sugar stable stopped the need to binge eat.
- Not dogmatic. Ever read a diet book where you feel like the author is practically trying to convert you to a religion? Gallop certainly believes in this diet and he makes no mention that it might not work for every person (see con below), however he spends most of his time laying out simple science and practical guidelines. He even says your goal should be to follow it 90% of the time. If you have a cookie, big deal, the worst thing that can happen is it will take slightly longer to lose some weight.Diet Con's:
- Unfortunately, as with all diets, this will work great for some people and not for others. Its more likely to work for you if you:
o Tend to carry your fat in the belly. i.e. "apple," "barrel," or "cone" shaped for women, or a guy with a "beer belly"
o Have major cravings for carbs - perhaps even binge eat on things like pastries, candy, pasta and bread.
o Have been diagnosed with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, or even type II diabetes
-The recipes can be bland - more from the author not being a chef, not the principals of the diet, so if you are a practiced cook you can make alterations for flavor and texture that stay true to the diet. The book encourages you to go the author's website where there are recipes submitted by readers available for free and they are quite good.
-You will have to cook. I have been on this diet for over two years and like to cook, so its been great for me. This book in the series is by far my favorite.
***UPDATE June 2008***
Make that 90+ pounds lost in three years. I still cook most of my food from the recipes found in Gallop's books. They have passed the picky boyfriend test, potluck test and the I can stick to this for the rest of my life test. Some points:
-During this time I have gone months and months with no weight loss but I was only *mostly* following the diet. I think I needed these breaks.
-I work out intensely for 60 minutes 4 days a week now.

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More Review

The Ultimate Smoothie Book: 130 Delicious Recipes for Blender Drinks, Frozen Desserts, Shakes, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I suppose that this book is for people who are already into whole foods. To people who aren't accustomed to such foods might read ingredients like Lecithin granules, Asorbic Acid, Sprilla and go "What the heck is that?" But, I'm weird, and I already have all that stuff. :)
It's also for people who have a good blender (obviously) and preferably a juicer, though store bought juices are fine. You just get more health benefits from fresh juices. And I'm glad the Author does understand that not everyone has a juicer.
That being said though, I've always enjoyed making healthful and delicious juices and smoothies. But the few other books I have, mainly the juice books, the recipes are a bit too fancy for me. Not to mention expensive. Great for entertaining guests I suppose, but just for me? Nah. Smoothies, for the most part I've just made up on my own. But realizing how many calories I was consuming with them woke me up a bit. I LOVE that this book has not only very yummy smoothies, but nutritional info for each one! I also love that they are all designed for specific health needs. Losing weight, Working out, Pregnancy, Boosting Immunity, etc. It also has a section for kids. What a wonderful way to get more healthy foods in my son's belly without his knowing it because they taste so damn awesome!
I love this book. And even though, as a few have complained, there are no pictures (I always look for cook books with beautiful photos) - this is the only Smoothie Book I need.
A side note about the cost of smoothies and juicing - I think this book saves you money. It has you making ice cubes from strong teas or fresh juices to add into future smoothies. So in my freezer, I have it stocked with labeled freezer bags of Beet Juice, Watermelon Carrot Juice, Coconut Milk. Today I planned on making up some Chai Tea Ice Cubes for the Chai Smoothie later. Juicing yourself in small amounts and freezing them really cuts down on the cost of produce. You use less, and your produce doesn't spoil before you get a chance to use it all.
Even still, if I see an apple looking a little sad. I just juice it instead of throwing it away.
Apples are also a good cheap filler for juicing. Any produce on the expensive side, I juice with apples to use less of the more expensive produce. The taste isn't changed much, and it adds fiber and other nutrients.

The Raw Food Revolution Diet Review

The Raw Food Revolution Diet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cherie Soria has lived this lifestyle for decades. As the reviewer above noted, she looks at least twenty years younger than her 60-something age.
Coming from a person like her, you can rest assured that this is not a fad, unbalanced diet. She is a vibrant, healthy, energetic person.

What I particularly like is that she has a great deal of sympathy and understanding of the challenges facing a person who is struggling with their weight and their health, and understands how intimidating it is to make that huge transition from a Standard American Diet to mostly raw vegan.
The best thing about the book is that each day's eating is completely laid out, so you don't have to fill your head with planning and making decisions. Just do what she says, and you'll very quickly 'get it' - because in the end, it's all very very simple. And you will feel so much healthier and cleaner (not to mention thinner!) very quickly. Within days. Once you 'get it', it's easy to use the book as a guide for taking over and planning for yourself.
There are lots of great raw cookbooks out there, but this explains the basics of what to eat, how much and when. So it's great for beginners.
She doesn't insist that you eat 100% raw, and has great suggestions for common concerns like cold weather, travelling, and eating out.
The book is very well-researched, and has a great deal of scientific information if you want it. There are easy to use charts. And she explains the big 'protein question' that always comes up - ie how do you get enough.
There are recipes for nutrient-packed and yet simple to prepare foods, with great sympathy for those of us who don't have a lot of time in the day. Nothing is very difficult to put together, and they are appealing to non-raw diners as well (who, if you didn't tell them what you were serving, probably wouldn't notice, and might even congratulate you on the quality of your hummus and hungrily devour the nut creams and desserts).
She goes on to explore and recommend special equipment like juicers and dehydrators, which might be useful additions to your kitchen if you continue to eat in this vein.
Overall, an excellent introduction to the new healthy you. My criticisms are minor, but I did find it a little hard to navigate without reading from cover to cover. And I would have preferred color photographs, to enhance the recipe pages. I'd recommend this book if your current food-style isn't creating the health and life you want to have.

Easy Healthy Cooking With 4 Ingredients Review

Easy Healthy Cooking With 4 Ingredients
Average Reviews:

The books claims to have easy soup and stew recipes. It delivers just that. The index is well organized by the ingredients and cooking method and I like the variety of recipes. For example, I was looking for a black bean soup recipe. There are several listed depending on taste preferences. Also, there are recipes that use dry black beans and others use canned black beans. With 365 recipes there are sure to be plenty to please all preferences and palates. The recipes certainly aren't gourmet, but why would anybody expect that out of a book with the title "Easy Soups & Stews"?

So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week Review

So Easy: Luscious, Healthy Recipes for Every Meal of the Week
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this book and read through it. It is even better the first one!
When I got Ellie's first book, I was thrilled to know that healthy food could still taste good.
However, there were still some recipes that I wished I had in Ellie's version.
This book definitely fills that hole. Ellie recreated many dishes in her healthy versions, and some of them are the ones people usually think to be impossible to be healthy. I can't wait until try every one of them.
Another thing that I like about this book is, the recipes were divided into breakfast, lunch, and dinner and each of them were again divided into slow and fast. So, you could pick the recipe that fits your schedule.
Fast lunch has recipes for lunch boxes, so as a working girl who tries to eat healthy, I couldn't be happier. Thanks Ellie for another great book. You are the best!!

The Healthy Start Kids' Cookbook: Fun and Healthful Recipes That Kids Can Make Themselves Review

The Healthy Start Kids' Cookbook: Fun and Healthful Recipes That Kids Can Make Themselves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This kids' cookbook starts with a brief and easy-to-understand discussion of nutrition. Safety tips for kid-cooks are included, as well as a handy illustrated glossary of kitchen tools and cooking terms.
But the "meat" of the book is the recipes. They are simple, fun, tasty and (don't tell the kids) good for you. There are sections on breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert. Many of the recipes are assembly line cooking (take a banana, stick a clean popsicle stick in the end and freeze overnight for a frozen banana treat) that will be a snap for even the youngest cook. But don't get the idea that this is all "cooking for babies." There's a "Sunny Honey Banana Bread" recipe with sunflower seeds that I'm making for the family tonight.

Betty Crocker The 300 Calorie Cookbook: 300 tasty meals for eating healthy every day (Betty Crocker Books) Review

Betty Crocker The 300 Calorie Cookbook: 300 tasty meals for eating healthy every day (Betty Crocker Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everytime I swear I won't cram another cookbook onto my bookshelf I leaf through something that seems to stand out among the other cookbooks I have, or is complete enough that it allows me to give away several cookbooks so that one can take its place.
This is one such cookbook.
Very extensive cookbook with around 300 recipes, it's divided into the following categories:
Center of the Plate
Savory Skillet Meals
Casseroles and Pot Pies
Meatless Main Dishes
Sandwiches, Salads, and Pizzas
Soups, Stews, and Chilies
Slow Cooker Suppers
Grilling Good and Easy
30 Min or Less
Cooking for Two
Which is why I say it's like having several cookbooks...if I'm in the mood to grill, I can pull this out and do it with fewer calories, if I have limited time, it still has recipes for me, if I don't want leftovers I use the cooking for two section, and I love the slow cooker suppers for those days when I want to throw some things into a pot in the morning and come home to a hot cooked meal, making me feel like my private chef slaved all day to have dinner ready and waiting! :-)
Here are a few examples of some of the recipes. I've found them to include easy-to-locate ingredients and be family pleasers so that the rest of the house doesn't even have to know it's "diet" food since they tend to be good comfort foods:
Honey Glazed chicken breasts
Baked Oregano Chicken (this is a great one at only 180 calories)
Smothered Cajun Pork Chops
Beef and Peppers with Biscuits
Cheese Enchiladas
Philly Steak Casserole
Cheese Filled Tortellini Soup
Black Bean Taco Salad
Baked Chicken and Rice with Autumn Veggies
Country French Beef Stew
Chicken and Dumplings
Creamy Crabmeat Au Gratin
Tex Mex Scrambled Eggs
Cajun Oven Fried Trout
Grilled Pizza
Tex Mex Meat Loaf
There are also lots of ethnic dishes thrown in if you, for example, are in the mood for Chinese food, Indian food, etc. And the meatless maindishes will make even a hearty carnivore forget what's missing.
This book, unlike most of my diet cookbooks, contains FULL nutritionals, even the protein, sodium etc. If you are following Weight Watchers you'll know the fat and fiber of every dish going in.
The instructions are super simple. I cook all the time but even if you have only made Kraft mac and cheese up til now, you'll not skip a beat.
NEGATIVES: I try to leave negatives on any review even if I love something since nothing is perfect but this book is jam packed with recipes, many with calories even in the one hundreds and they are easy to prepare, healthy, and tasty and have full nutritionals. That's an A+ cookbook for me. I'f I had to say something others might not like, I might say it doesn't contain photos for all recipes (it does have several photos, just not for all) but bear in mind the book is already at almost 400 pages with its tips and recipes so you might not fit it into your cookbook holder if got any bigger. :-)
I love this one. It's both rare and well-done.
p.s. My calorie goal when I am dieting is 1250 calories per day. (This was scientifically figured out for me with a bodybugg. I'm a weight loss coach.) I burn 1950 calories per day usually in just normal activities so this deficit enables me to lose well if I also increase my activity( a little over 2 lbs per week) since a deficit of 3,500 calories equals a loss of one pound. (Your body uses fat stores for energy when it has a deficit.) Your calorie needs will vary of course based upon your height and weight and activity but there are several places online that you can get an estimate of what your body uses in order to figure out the deficit needed for weight loss even without a bodybugg. (All weight loss is, afterall, is taking in less calories than you burn.) This is great if you want to eat fresh food yet measure exactly what you are taking in as well.
But I'm not always on a diet. And to be honest, I use this book even when I am not on a diet. I like the recipes. I just get to eat more!
This keeps me satisfied and it's more of a food change than a diet.

Mediterranean Light: Delicious Recipes from the World's Healthiest Cuisine Review

Mediterranean Light: Delicious Recipes from the World's Healthiest Cuisine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many of the recipes in this cookbook are okay, but when I ordered it I failed to notice that it contains a "Forward by Dean Ornish, M.D." That would have been the tip-off.
We all know that too much fat is bad for us, and like many Americans my husband and I eat "light" nowadays--nonfat dairy products; very little beef, lamb or pork; no butter or margerine; skinless chicken and turkey. But much has changed in the dietary world since Shulman's book was first published in 1989. We now know that there are "good" fats as well as bad ones, and that an EXTREMELY low fat diet can be almost as unhealthy as a high-fat one.
If you are vegetarian, this book will probably be useful to you. However, it contains only nine recipes that contain chicken (note that most are not truly "chicken dishes"). Few recipes contain cheese or dairy products of any kind, and most disturbing is her insistance on reducing the olive oil content of most dishes to a miniscule amount. She even includes a recipe for a traditional provencal onion pissaladiere (pizza) which always includes olives: she writes she "left out the olives . . .for the diet version"!
There are many, many excellent mediterranean cookbooks on the market without going to the extreme of Shulman's. Dr. Atkins and Dr. Ornish are at the opposite extremes of the twenty-year- long fat versus carb controversy. Try an alternative mediterranean cookbook and find yourself a satisfying middle ground. I suggest The Mediterranean Diet Cookbook or any of Paula Wolfert's cookbooks. Another, unfortunately out of print, is Mediterranean Cooking the Healthful Way by Marilyn Spieler--my personal favorite. Go ahead: drizzle, don't dump, olive oil on your food and pop a couple of kalamata olives in your mouth. It's okay!

A diet only works as long as you are on it. This is a new way of eating. Their are so many choices that you never tire of the SB approach. I'm presently working on my Master of Science Degree in Biology and can verify that the SB works from biological point of view. I have always excercised and could not keep the weight off. After following the guidelines in the book I'm eating chicken, steak, whole wheat bread, eggs, lots of veggies, almost all the fruit I want and Im still losing weight. The SB way is not a low carbohydrate, high protein diet. It is well balanced and full of fiber, carbohydrates, protein, and the right type of fat. I found that the sugar addiction is easy to break and once broken, culinary life is still enjoyable. This "diet" works because you can eat the SB way from now on. The book is well written and very informative. It is a must read for anyone interested in why the American public is steadly putting on weight. Buy the book it will change your life!

Ellie Krieger is different from the exercise fanatics and diet gurus out there in that she doesn't promise you'll lose 10 pounds or two inches off your waist if you adhere to a strict regimen over the course of a week. Instead, she provides all the tools you'll need to develop a healthy attitude toward eating that doesn't sacrifice flavor or require intensive labor. The crux of her approach is common-sensical: fresh ingredients, lots of whole grains, reasonable portions. But while the idea seems easy enough, Ellie makes it even simpler by outlining what ingredients to keep in stock (for a quick meal anytime) and what small but oh-so-important finishing touches change a dish from bland into brilliant. So far, I've made about a dozen of the recipes in this book (including 4 alone for one meal), and all have been met with rave reviews from the appreciative attendees. I recommend a meal consisting of the Oven-Fried Chicken, Garlic Fries, Zucchini Parmesan Crisps, and finishing off with the Ricotta Cheesecake with Fresh Raspberries. Let your oven do all the work, and stop worrying about your waistline!
I am a fan of Ellie's television show and completely agree with her food philosophy. If we all learn to love the way food tastes, instead of over-processing and masking it in fats and chemicals, then we can once again relish our meals instead of feeling guilty about them. Ellie will show you how in this book full of great recipes. Not only does she transform comfort foods like mashed potatoes and meatloaf into her better-for-youversions, but she also provides recipes inspired by a variety of cuisines ranging from Asian, Greek, and Middle-Eastern and covering every meal, including side dishes and desserts.
Don't expect a strict plan or any guaranteed weight loss. Ellie herself doesn't tout the "Never" approach and teaches us all that foods belong in three categories: Usually, Sometimes, and Rarely. The main reason most diets fail is because they are unrealistic and too limiting. Ellie's approach is different; it shows you a better way to eat "The Food You Crave." Anyone who wants to learn how to prepare delicious AND healthful foods should pick up a copy of this book!
