Christmas With Martha Stewart Living Review

Christmas With Martha Stewart Living
Average Reviews:

What would Christmas be without Martha Stewart? I can't imagine. This book covers Christmas in every stage from planning a month before to enjoying the big day. Everything is mapped out in accessible detail. The finished products look so "Martha Stewart," yet they are so simple to make, especially the folded paper stars, boxes of Swiss meringue,(which are spectacular) and the felt bags. My book is well worn and I find myself reaching for it almost monthly. The Lime Meringue Tart recipe alone is worth the price of the book!

Wine, Food & Friends: Karen's Wine and Food Pairing Guide, Plus Over 100 Cooking Light Recipes Review

Wine, Food and Friends: Karen's Wine and Food Pairing Guide, Plus Over 100 Cooking Light Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other reviews I saw about this book only said it was a great book and applauded Ms. MacNeil but did so without giving any specifics. Well here's why it would be a good book to own.
The menus are divided into seasons. So the food will be at its peak and then with Ms. MacNeil's wine pairings you just can't go wrong. The unfortunate thing is that she suggests specific wines. In my little town I can't find many of the wines she suggests. I try to go with a wine that is a similar grape varietal, region, etc but I've failed more than I've succeeded in this hit or miss pairing. However, it's been fun making new finds and we have found some of the specific wines that she has suggested and they were wonderful.
For the holiday dessert menu, all 4 wines that were suggested were $75+ dollars each. I would have liked to have had different price points rather than blow out my budget on one gathering. I'm sure the $75+ Port she suggests is outstanding but I still have to feed my family for the month and that's definitely a splurge rather than a frequent event.
I wanted to find a book that I could use over and over and spending that kind of money is not something I could do on a regular basis. If there had been different price point suggestions then I could purchase one bottle that's pricey but these were all pricey. Just couldn't do it. But the dessert recipes were great and it gives me ideas and encourages me to broaden my wine/food repertoire.
I made the garlic rosemary roasted chicken, spicy sweet potato wedges and then paired it with Cotes-du-rhones. I could not afford the $$$ suggestion she made of Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas. I'm sure it would have been good but $35 for a weekday dinner wine is too stiff for my budget.
The recipe for the classic french bread was excellent. I had the Alsace Riesling with it and a pork roast. It was delish but again I did not purchase the $$$ bottle she suggested but a much cheaper bottle that was just as good. So this cookbook has certainly gotten me interested and motivated to try new things and provides the food recipes to do it.
If you're looking for a book that includes recipes and wine pairings then I would suggest This Food, That Wine it had more reasonably priced wines for everyday consumption as well as everyday type meals. Wine, Food & Friends is reserved for the special occasions when you want a presentation that includes expensive food and expensive wine.

Cooking Light Complete Cookbook: A Fresh New Way to Cook (Book & CD-ROM) Review

Cooking Light Complete Cookbook: A Fresh New Way to Cook (Book and CD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm used to cooking rich, fattening foods that make you gain weight by just looking at it. My husband is a testimate to that. I had a coming to Jesus talk with God because I feared he was going to die on me and he is only 43. He had gained 40 lbs.
Anyway, I have always thought light cooking is tasteless cooking. I couldn't be more wrong. My husband has lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks. He loves everything I cook from this cookbook.
I haven't tried too many other books. Being new to healthy cooking I figured I'd start here. I'm buying one for my sister and my mother because these recipes are easy and tasty.

The Best Make-Ahead Recipe Review

The Best Make-Ahead Recipe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you don't own "Cover & Bake," this a five-star book; skip down to "Here's What I Like ..."
I think this may be the lowest rating I've ever given to a CI book (I own seven in the Best series and a handful of others.) If you own "Cover & Bake," you have many of the recipes in this book, hence the low rating.
Some of the shared recipes include:
Slow Cooker Favorites (5 of the 17 are shared with C&B)
-Pot Roast
-Beef Stew
-Brisket
-Chili
-Beef & Barley Soup
Sides (There are two shared recipes)
Casseroles (There are more variations of the recipes in this book) both books share:
-Baked Ziti
-Lasagna
-Manicotti
-Mac & Cheese
-Chicken Enchiladas
-Chicken Pot Pie
-Beef Pot Pie
-Tamale Pie
-Shepherd's Pie
Lamb & Eggplant Moussaka
-Chicken & Rice Casserole
Breakfast & Breads (only the bread recipes are unique to this book. What irks me is that the same photo is used for the start of the breakfast chapters in each book.) Shared recipes are:
-24-Hour Omelet
-French Toast Casserole
-Breakfast Strata
Here is what I like about the book
-TOC in each chapter
-The Double-Duty Cooking Chapter is great -- cook a little extra now for tomorrow's dish that won't taste like leftovers
-All of the stews and the majority of the casseroles can be made ahead and frozen. Outside of those categories, you'll find maybe 10 additional recipes that can be frozen.
-Desserts
-Make-Ahead Holiday Menus
If you don't have "Cover & Bake" get this book. When reviewed in isolation, it is a five-star book. If you're deciding which to choose, this book has a range of recipes across appetizers, sides, main courses and desserts. If you're looking for a complete make-ahead meal, this book is the way to go.

Slurp: Drinks and Light Fare, All Day, All Night Review

Slurp: Drinks and Light Fare, All Day, All Night
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The best thing about this book is the stunning photography. It starts out with some basics talking about the various types of barware and garnishes. The book is then divided by the time of day. It gives recipe for non-alcoholic and alcoholic breakfast drinks and a couple of recipes of what would go with them food wise. It then goes on to cover lunch and dinner. The recipes are simple. There are a few recipes that I thought I might try. As far as a drink book goes, you get a lot more in an actual bar book. If all you want is just a sampling of drinks this book would be good for you.

Entertaining Review

Entertaining
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very disappointed to discover that the 16 year old book had NOT been updated in any way, other than a new cover and 1 page preface. The photos are outdated and the wedding portion does not have any of the new cake decorating techniques such as rolled fondant. At the very least, I expected updated photos.
However, the recipes look wonderful and the tips on entertaining for different sized groups are helpful. The frugal shopper may wish to simply purchase a used copy of the old version of Entertaining on the auction site since it's EXACTLY the same.
