The G.I. Diet Cookbook Review

The G.I. Diet Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This diet has really worked for me and I want to add some of my observations. There are some pretty comprehensive reviews on here already so I will not summarize anything from the book to minimize repetition.
Stats on me:
I started in May of 05 and lost 5 pounds a week for the first four weeks. I only lost so much because I was well over 200lb (as a 5'5'' female). After that it was more gradual with plateaus and minor ups and downs. I have gone periods were I was only following it 50% faithfully and did not gain the weight back. I am moderately active: gym two to three times a week (usually for an hour water aerobics class) and I do not have a car so I walk everywhere.
Diet Pro's:
- Its Healthy. No doctor would be concerned if his/her patient ate veggies and balanced whole grains and lean proteins. Worst-case scenario: you try it and don't loose weight, but you will not have hurt your metabolism or raised your cholesterol in doing so.
- Its Not a Gimmick. This is not based on "eat all the bacon and cheese you want" or some other counter-intuitive nonsense. Its principals are in line with what is known and widely accepted in medical science.
- Cuts Cravings and is designed to keep your belly full. With three meals and three snacks a day of slowly digested food I am not hungry. Additionally, keeping my blood sugar stable stopped the need to binge eat.
- Not dogmatic. Ever read a diet book where you feel like the author is practically trying to convert you to a religion? Gallop certainly believes in this diet and he makes no mention that it might not work for every person (see con below), however he spends most of his time laying out simple science and practical guidelines. He even says your goal should be to follow it 90% of the time. If you have a cookie, big deal, the worst thing that can happen is it will take slightly longer to lose some weight.Diet Con's:
- Unfortunately, as with all diets, this will work great for some people and not for others. Its more likely to work for you if you:
o Tend to carry your fat in the belly. i.e. "apple," "barrel," or "cone" shaped for women, or a guy with a "beer belly"
o Have major cravings for carbs - perhaps even binge eat on things like pastries, candy, pasta and bread.
o Have been diagnosed with insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, or even type II diabetes
-The recipes can be bland - more from the author not being a chef, not the principals of the diet, so if you are a practiced cook you can make alterations for flavor and texture that stay true to the diet. The book encourages you to go the author's website where there are recipes submitted by readers available for free and they are quite good.
-You will have to cook. I have been on this diet for over two years and like to cook, so its been great for me. This book in the series is by far my favorite.
***UPDATE June 2008***
Make that 90+ pounds lost in three years. I still cook most of my food from the recipes found in Gallop's books. They have passed the picky boyfriend test, potluck test and the I can stick to this for the rest of my life test. Some points:
-During this time I have gone months and months with no weight loss but I was only *mostly* following the diet. I think I needed these breaks.
-I work out intensely for 60 minutes 4 days a week now.

Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Family Classic s Collection: Lose Weight with 416 More Great Recipes Review

Taste of Home Comfort Food Diet Cookbook: New Family Classic s Collection: Lose Weight with 416 More Great Recipes

I'M A MAN. I LOVE THE FOOD. My wife loves the healthy recipes. I'm a 2 heart attack survivor and wish to stay that way, but I enjoy what most men enjoy. This cookbook allows the delights of eating without the danger. She likes the nutrition info on each recipe. She easily finds low salt & fat recipes that I crave. Like "Shepherds Pie", a super salsa, which I beg to be served with "cheese straws", & a thick macho "loaded Mexican pizza." I can't believe it's healthy eating.
She tries to tell me how healthy all of our eating has become, and I appreciate her efforts, and this book. But let's face it, diet books are a dime a dozen. This is more. It's a GREAT FOODS BOOK. First comes a tasty recipe, then they've made it nutritional and heartily healthy. Diabetic needs are addressed too. I've told my wife, "Use this book for a year. Toss out the others. These are man-awesome and healthy. A winner on my plate."
I enjoy sitting with my wife and using the color photos to pick out a different recipe. I've suggested we try next the dessert "caramel apple pizza" because it looks like a treat you'd buy at the State Fair.
She was delighted that the book came with a FREE cooking magazine. And she loves the free access to online weight-loss tools. The front of this book offers tips on weight loss techniques that are man-woman-family friendly. Tips aligned with what my cardiologist suggests. The index is excellent for home-grown food. Example: if you have abundance on squash, go to the squash index and see the list of recipes, including portion calories. Or there is the traditional recipe name index as well.
It's not often that a MAN falls in love with a cookbook. Here is a winner. Buy it, gals, and delight your man, even if he doesn't want to know he's eating healthy.
Of course if you don't like your hubby, or you enjoy him as Portly Pig, buy another cookbook.
My babe (we're in our 60s) wants me around a bit longer, God bless her.

Cooking Light Comfort Food: Home-Cooked, Delicious Classics Made Light Review

Cooking Light Comfort Food: Home-Cooked, Delicious Classics Made Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I avoid most healthy cookbooks, mainly because I don't believe in dieting per se, but also because most of them are full of bland "diet foods" or recipes full of fake substitute ingredients. But Cooking Light has always earned my respect because they offer good food that's tweaked just enough to make it healthier while preserving the flavor and integrity of the original dish, and not insulting my intelligence by trying to convince me that a piece of boiled chicken and a dry, undressed salad, with a glass of chemical-sweetened diet soda on the side, make for a delicious meal.
This latest Cooking Light book does not disappoint. As the title suggests, these are recipes for dishes that most of us, if we're honest with ourselves, absolutely love - comfort food. You'll find timeless favorites ranging from chicken and dumplings and pot roast with mashed potatoes, to sweet rolls and key lime pie. And the best part is, the changes do not come from things like artificial sweeteners and unsatisfying tricks like using chicken broth to make mashed potatoes. The recipes call for real ingredients, used in sensible moderation and smaller amounts than the original recipes. Things like butter, sugar, and low and no-fat dairy products. If, like me, you prefer not to use the non-fat stuff, it's easily switched out for the reduced-fat variety, with little change in per-serving fat or calories.
The smart, sensible balance achieved by this book makes eating healthier a do-able goal, far easier than the fake ingredients and deprivation found elsewhere. Hungry girl? Nope, a satisfied woman. Highly recommended.

Growing at the Speed of Life: A Year in the Life of My First Kitchen Garden Review

Growing at the Speed of Life: A Year in the Life of My First Kitchen Garden
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got to say I really like this book. I got it from the library and now I have to break down and buy it. It has very concise information on both growing and using - showing how to grow, say potatoes: different kinds from plain to blue designer, what to avoid, how to mound the soil, how to get a better skin, how to determine size, how to store, not to plant where nightshade has been and THEN how to cook - little potatoes go into boiling salted water whereas big potatoes go into cold water and bring to a boil. Boil 12 minutes, drain and cover with a towel for 10 minutes. Then mouth watering recipes follow. The Perfect Potato.
Everything you can grow to eat is covered in this kind of detail... I am impressed. I loved his TV show - very knowledgeable and funny guy... he is almost 80 now, still cooking and now gardening. Nice clear line drawings.

With more than two dozen cookbooks and hundreds of television shows, lectures, and personal appearances devoted to promoting healthful cooking, award-winning chef and former "Galloping Gourmet" Graham Kerr literally starts from the ground up in this engaging, inspiring, and highly informative introduction to the joys of the kitchen garden-and the pleasures of the table that start with growing your own food. While Kerr taps into the current trend of sustainability, eating locally and organically, and eschewing fast food, he recognizes that today's home cooks are savvier and more discerning than their predecessors in the back-to-the-land movement. And in this day of rampant obesity and related diseases, he understands how critical taking these vital steps toward wellness can be. Growing at the Speed of Life takes you through the first year in his kitchen garden, sharing the lessons learned and the wisdom received from his circle of local knowledge providers. From digging up his "south lawn" and putting together a greenhouse to planting his first seeds and harvesting and sharing his first crop with others in need, Kerr provides a whirlwind tour through his gardening adventures. Along the way, he profiles sixty common-and not-so-common but readily available-garden vegetables, fruits, and herbs with useful advice and recommendations for care and feeding. Once the harvest is done, Kerr takes you into the kitchen, offering guidance on the best cooking methods to create appealing dishes in his inimitable and spirited style. He includes more than one hundred recipes that are as simple and elegant as they are healthful-and that will certainly entice you to increase the amount of plant foods in your diet.
