Like many other Amazon cookbook aficionados, I like to buy cookbooks but I don't always cook from them. This Cooking Light book is an exception because it highlights only entrees, which is what I usually look for. There are photos for each recipe and sidebars giving quick recipes for side dishes to accompany the main course. Wonderful, ethnic ideas, lots of Mexican and Asian, and many good old American dishes like chicken pot pie! I will definitely use this book a lot. Excellent, fresh recipes.

I'm not much for creating my own recipes. I think I have the skill to do it, but I simply haven't the time, particularly not for a slow cooker (isn't the point of having one, after all, that you have so much to do, see, experience that you don't want to spend anymore time than necessary in the kitchen?). So-o-o it was with some trepidation that I ordered this book. Truth be told, it was to bump the order over $25, so S&H would be free. Imagine my delight and surprise when I found actual recipes inside, not meat-or-veg-with-canned-soup-poured-over. In particular I love the recipe for a tamale pie, with cornbread crust and cheese topping. As with any slow cooker, the special taste you get from high direct heat is missing, but most of these recipes are juicy, stewy things with delightful combinations of flavors. Best of all, each is accompanied by a nutritional analysis which allows me to cipher Weight Watchers points. I have found that one of the things I miss most about living alone is opening the apartment door after work and smelling -- what? -- furniture polish? something gone bad in the trash? This book and my slow cooker let me open the door to the delightful aroma of a supper I know I will enjoy. Buy it; you'll like it.

How I Gave Up My Low-Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds (Revised and Expanded Edition) Review

I am a born sceptic. I also have been obsessed with food for my entire adult life. When I am going to eat, what I am going to eat, where I am going to eat, if there will be enough food left by the time I get to the front of the line... Not a very nice way to live. This book HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! So far, everything she has said has been true. Everything that she said would happen, has happened. And it's not hard to do at all!Sure, the initial adjustment to serving a meal with no potatoes or bread is a little odd, but you get over it pretty fast. Somehow, this diet just clicked with me. After reading her book, I have at least 6 more reasons to eat this way than just to lose weight. That's not even my focus any more! She explained all the different approaches of all these other authors and shows you how to pick and choose which aspects of which approaches will work best for you. It's remarkably easy to read, too!
I used this book along with Lauri's Lo-Carb Cookbook and the Greg Smithey "Easy Toning" tape, and I lost 10 pounds the first week and, I don't know if my initial measurement was wrong or what, but I lost and INCH off my waist! I have ordered the rest of Mr. Smithey's "Easy" videos now, and use Lauri's cookbook everyday. I have not yet found a recipe I or my husband didn't like.
I hope you find something that works for you. But for my money, this was the best that was out there for me.

How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds! is a breezy, chatty, non-technical, fun-to-read explanation of low carbohydrate dieting -- why it works, the surprising health benefits, and most importantly, how to "do" the diet. Or, rather, diets, since the book details three very different main approaches to controlling carbohydrates (including the Basic Low Carb Diet, similar to Atkins or Protein Power, and the Mini-Binge Diet, popularized as The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), plus several variations, finally summing up the basic principles which tie them all together. The point is to give the reader the tools necessary to construct a new way of eating that will fit his or her body, psyche, and lifestyle, thus allowing them to stay slim, energetic, and healthy for life.
