(More customer reviews)Susan Pollack knows fishing: She's written about fishing communities from Newfoundland to Chesapeake Bay. She's also familiar with the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association, the venerable organization that, since 1969, has been a powerful force for conservation of New England's fishing heritage: in 2002, a Pollack article on the association was anthologized in the "Best Spiritual Writing."
It makes sense, then, that she compiled "The Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Cookbook: Stories and Recipes, a must-have on many levels: not only is it an original, versatile and extensive collection of exquisite recipes, it is also a profound historical and biographical sketch of individual fishing families from the women who run them."
Brian Arundel, National Fisherman, January 2006

Since its founding in 1969, the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives Association has been a powerful force for the conservation of New England's precious fishing grounds and heritage. The Wives have helped improve safety standards on US vessels; create the first subsidized health plan for fishermen; establish a marine sanctuary at Stellwagen Bank; and protect the health of the oceans and the future of the fisheries that feed us all. Food is the centerpiece of any Wives' gathering and, as the women know, it is food that sustains, not only the lives of activists, but those of their families and the stalwart fishng crews who labor at sea. This book celebrates the Wives' cuisine and politics with stories of cooking, courage, and love. Savor the photographs and feast on the foods that have nurtured Gloucester's seafaring families for generations.
